The best article I’ve read in the National Geographic magazine
Hello,
I’ve recently read 9 “National Geographic” magazines, old issues, 2004 year. Original English edition. Thanks goes to Alexandra POPA.
What I liked best is a a paradoxical part: “Revisiting the Elephant Hunters of Tanzania”. It starts with “We let you down.” and continues (see bottom of the page for a quote):
Reframing Contemporary Africa: Politics, Economics, and Culture in the Global Era

What did I like about the article?
- On one hand it’s a hands-on experience on how a photographer can fake a photo session in Africa; this part was a bit funny, to see how a photographer took some tusks from the Tanzania Department of Wildlife and faked a photo session;
- On the other hand, it’s very touching to read about the emotions of the Editor:
“But I’m still losing sleep over the fact that we failed to uncover the truth before publishing the pictures”.
- Finally, it’s empowering to know the trust the reader is set to expect on a typical magazine:
“[...] he violated his legal contract with us. We, in turn, unwittingly violated our unwritten contract with you, the reader, about the accuracy and honesty you’ve come to expect in NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC photographs and text.”
On the “National Geographic” magazine itself:
- High quality articles;
- Impressive thoughts of readers (even negative and contradictory ones);
- Stunning photos.
But I did like this article best.
